Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Nazanin Afshin-Jam hold their son Kian, born in Ottawa April 1, 2013.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay is a new dad.

Mr. MacKay's wife, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, gave birth to a boy on Monday.

"Welcome to the world Kian Alexander MacKay. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts, prayers and support. We are overjoyed with our baby boy," Mr. MacKay announced via Twitter.

Kian was born at 4:52 a.m. (EDT) in Ottawa, weighing 8 pounds and 2 ounces, according to Paloma Aguilar, Mr. MacKay's press secretary.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper sent congratulations to the new parents via Twitter: "Laureen and I are thrilled to hear the news of Kian Alexander MacKay's arrival. We send our best wishes to Peter and Nazanin."

Mr. MacKay and Ms. Afshin-Jam, an Iranian-born activist, announced they were expecting a baby in September. The couple married in January 2012.
