Mr. Leech is an outspoken opponent of gay marriage and found himself in hot water after saying on a radio talk show: “I think, as a Caucasian, I have an advantage. When different community leaders such as a Sikh leader or a Muslim leader speaks they really speak to their own people in many ways. As a Caucasian, I believe that I can speak to all the community.”
Despite high hopes, the fledgling Alberta Party, lead by interim leader Sue Huff in Edmonton-Glenora, has so far failed to take an assembly seat.
Wildrose candidate Allan Hunsperger lost the Edmonton -South West riding to PC Matt Jeneroux. Mr. Hunsperger caused a stir during the campaign with statements that critics called intolerant. In a year-old blog post, the pastor said gays will spend eternity in a “lake of fire, hell.”
John Barlow, PC, lost to Danielle Smith of WRP. An associate newspaper publisher with deep ties and a lengthy record of community volunteering, he felt he had a good shot of winning.
