Toronto fire officials say an early morning blaze in Scarborough has sent five people to hospital, three of them in critical condition.

Firefighters say the three had been trapped inside the burning home, near Lawrence Avenue East and Birchmount Road, and had to be rescued by emergency crews.

Another two — a woman and baby — managed to escape on their own and were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officials say the flames broke out around 1 a.m. and appear to have started in a van parked in the driveway before spreading to the house.

Damage to the house is said to be extensive.
