A 14-year-old Guelph girl is recovering in hospital after almost dying in a U of T pool before being saved by two lifeguards.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was a camper with Peel Summer Academy, a residential camp for gifted students in grades 4 to 8. Lifeguards noticed the girl was in distress when they began clearing the Mississauga campus pool of 70 campers at the end of their swimming session.

Two lifeguards pulled her from the water with no vital signs. They performed CPR until she regained consciousness and started breathing on her own. EMS arrived quickly after the incident and brought her to the Credit Valley Hospital.

U of T spokesperson Nicolle Wahl said the two lifeguards were "pretty shaken up."

"It's a pretty traumatic event for them and they're still coming down off of it," she said. Pool staff are conducting an internal review of the incident.

The girl is now at the Hospital for Sick Children for observation, and her family is at her side, according to staff from the Peel Summer Academy. The two week session she was enrolled in was scheduled to end Friday.
