Police have identified a 12-year-old boy who died after being stabbed at a downtown Toronto hotel, as well as the person charged in his death.

They say Danai Plain died in hospital after officers were called to the hotel just before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Twenty-one-year-old Hasadinn Plain has been charged with first degree murder.

Police are not elaborating on the relationship between the two, but had previously described the killing as "a family situation."

The boy and his relatives were guests at the Cambridge Suites Hotel in Toronto's financial district when the stabbing took place.

Police have said there is no threat to public safety.
