Ontario's police watchdog says a 50-year-old man has died after being injured in a multi-vehicle crash northwest of Toronto.

The Special Investigations Unit says a Peel region police officer began a pursuit after spotting a vehicle and its 55-year-old driver in Brampton around 11 a.m. Monday.

It says that officer lost track of the vehicle, as did a second officer who later joined the pursuit.

The SIU says the suspect vehicle then collided with several other vehicles.

It says the man was rushed to a Brampton hospital and was then taken to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto before succumbing to his injuries.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
