A man was killed early Sunday afternoon after being shot multiple times in a downtown Toronto condo parking lot.
Reports of a man involved in a motorcycle collision brought emergency crews to the scene at 954 King St. W. around 12:30 p.m. When paramedics arrived, they found a man dead next to a motorcycle on the ground and discovered he was suffering from several gunshot wounds rather than accident-related injuries.
Homicide investigators were seen canvassing the area in Toronto's King West Village, just northwest of King Street and Strachan Avenue, with forensics and K-9 units on the scene late into the afternoon.
Police did not confirm whether the victim's next of kin had been notified, but officers at the site were seen addressing a group of seven men outside the building. The men were seen embracing, visibly emotional, as they spoke to police, but refused to comment. It was unclear whether any of them were residents of the building.
Residents were not being allowed in or out of the four-storey lofts building late into the afternoon as the investigation continued. Several of them told The Globe and Mail that access to the two levels of underground parking was restricted to residents of the condo building and a row of townhomes behind it, as well as to visitors that needed to be buzzed in. They added that they were unaware of any video surveillance inside the parking lot.
Bill Nemesi, who lives in a townhouse across the street from the parking lot on Crawford Street, said he was taking out the trash when he heard a commotion. Neighbours confirmed that it sounded like multiple gunshots.
"This is a safe neighbourhood," he said. "Lots of families. I can't believe this would happen around here."
Police did not release information on the victim or say they were looking at suspects, but asked that anyone with more information contact 14 Division.
