Police issue Canada-wide warrant for accused in gas station death Add to ...

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a Mississauga man charged in the death last year of a 62-year-old gas station attendant, killed on the job by a motorist who filled his tank and then drove away, fatally striking the attendant as he did so.

Abdullahi Mohamoud, 22, was arrested in October, 2011 and charged in the death of  Hashem Atifeh Rad, the father of two children.

On May 19, 2011, Mr. Rad had been working the afternoon shift at  a Shell gas station near Truscott Drive and Southdown Road when the driver of  a gold-coloured vehicle was spotted covering up his licence plates, shortly before pulling up.

He  then drove into the  station, pumped some gas and attempted to flee without paying, Peel Regional Police said.

Mr. Rad tried to prevent the driver from leaving but was struck by the car as it drove away.

Mr. Mohamoud was subsequently freed on bail, but then rearrested on the strength of  a warrant from  Alberta over some separate outstanding charges and returned to Edmonton, where he was released again.

He was to have appeared in court in Brampton in August but failed to show up, and a local bench warrant was issued.

Now, with Mr. Mohamoud’s whereabouts still unknown,  authorities in Brampton have expanded the warrant to make it Canada-wide.

Mr. Mohamoud is charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident; criminal negligence causing death; theft under $5,000; and breach of recognizance. He is thought to be in the Edmonton area.

Anyone with knowledge of where he might be is urged to call investigators in the Major Collision Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3710. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Peel Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by visiting http://www.peelcrimestoppers.ca/.
