Sonia Varaschin is seen in a 2007 photo provided by police.

Police say the family of a missing Orangeville woman should brace for the worst.

While police say they hope Sonia Varaschin will be found alive, chances are fading as the investigation wears thin on day four of the search. One would-be witness didn't see as much as officials had hoped.

Ms. Varaschin, a 42-year-old nurse, was last seen Sunday evening and was reported missing Monday when she failed to show up for work.

Her car was found, bloodied and abandoned near her home, which also had traces of blood inside. Forensic investigations have led police to announce suspected foul play.

Friends and fellow nurses have reached out to each other, sending emails with prayers, said Dianna Findlay, executive director at Epilepsy Ontario, a sponsor for Summerfest Camp, where Ms. Varaschin worked summers as a volunteer nurse.

"It doesn't look good. We're all just devastated." Ms. Findlay said. "We're waiting with our hearts in our throats."

Ms. Varaschin provided medical attention to the Summerfest camp-goers, who have epilepsy and require extra care while away for the two-week program at Camp Couchiching, on Lake Couchiching.

Police say they will continue their search, and are asking Orangeville residents to check their property for anything out of the ordinary.

With grim warnings from police, a Facebook page has been launched in Ms. Varaschin's name. One photo posted shows Ms. Varaschin smiling with a group on a couch in front of a Christmas tree. Messages flood the page.

"I went to high school with Sonia, she is a sweet girl who wouldn't hurt a fly," reads one Facebook post.
