RCMP have identified the boy who died in an aboriginal community in southeastern Saskatchewan.
Six-year-old Lee Allan Bonneau was found with serious injuries in a wooded area about two blocks away from the community centre hall on the on Kahkewistahaw (kack-ah-WISH-tah-haw) First Nation.
"His mother describes him as a fun-loving boy on his way to Grade 2 next year who had the deepest laugh and loved being outdoors," Sgt. Craig Cleary said Friday.
The boy was last seen around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday playing with dogs outside the community centre where people had gathered for bingo.
Lee was reported missing at around 10:00 p.m., was found around 10:20 p.m. and died of his injuries in hospital.
Cleary said the boy's injuries were not caused by the dogs. Police say they have leads but no charges have been laid.
Police said they are awaiting results of an autopsy to help answer how the child died.
The chief of the First Nation said the small community is reeling.
"As you can imagine our small community is in a state of disbelief and shock," said Sheldon Taypotat.
"We are working with crisis team members to ensure the family and community members are supported."
Police say the boy's family is asking for privacy.
A Saskatchewan government spokeswoman says the boy was in care of the Ministry of Social Services and in a foster home.
