Rossi pledges to tunnel Allen under downtown if elected Add to ...

If elected mayor, Rocco Rossi will tunnel the Allen Expressway under the downtown core to meet up with the Gardiner.

The mayoral candidate doesn't know how much the tunnel would cost or where the money would come from, although he said tolling the subterranean expressway is a possibility. He said an initial study into the tunnel's cost and feasibility would likely cost around $1.5-million.

Speaking beside the commuter artery on a grass median at the corner of Eglinton, Mr. Rossi said although ending the Allen was a good idea at the time, the thoroughfare would better serve Torontonian motorists if it continued the rest of the way downtown, but went underground to avoid destroying the neighbourhoods Mr. Rossi called "the crown jewels" of the city.

A Toronto Board of Trade policy paper released Monday morning slammed the leading mayoral candidates for presenting piecemeal platforms that lack vision.

But Mr. Rossi claimed his vision for Toronto is "as tall as the CN Tower and as deep as the Allen Tunnel."
