A man who died in Toronto police custody early today has prompted a call to the Special Investigations Unit.

The agency says police were called to a disturbance at a club on downtown Yonge St. just after 2 a.m. and there was an "interaction" between a man and officers.

The SIU says the man went into medical distress and was taken to hospital by ambulance and subsequently died.

The man's name and age have not been released.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the incident.
