Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate a shooting in Toronto's west end early Saturday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m., police responded to a call of a man breaking into cars in the Dixon Road and Islington Avenue area.

When officers arrived, there was an interaction between the man and police where the man sustained a gunshot wound, police said.

According to an SIU release, the 28-year-old man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital for treatment.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the incident.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
