Home Ground: Contemporary Art from the Barjeel Art Foundation

Armed with the notion that art can be used to counter some of the negative stereotypes associated with the Middle East, Sheikh Sultan Sooud al-Qassemi of the United Arab Emirates is bent on exposing his private collection of modern and contemporary Arab art internationally. The product of a dozen artists, the works cover photography, video, installation, sculpture and painting, with the media united by an awareness of the struggle to forge identity in an ever volatile world.

To Jan. 3, 2016. $15 to $20. Aga Khan Museum, 77 Wynford Dr., 416-646-4677 or agakhanmuseum.org.

NIGHTTIME

Night It Up!

Love it or hate it, there’s no ignoring stinky tofu, one of the Asian delicacies to be hawked at a three-day food market that runs, as one might guess, late into the p.m. Beyond food from some 120 vendors, there are outdoor movie screenings, sports activities, stage performances and situations of social painting to be had. As for which exotic food things to try, go with your gut and don’t follow your nose.

July 25 (2 p.m. to midnight) and July 26 (2 to 8 p.m.). Free. Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Blvd., Markham, nightitup.com.

Classic Albums Live: The Beatles

The final paying concert by the Beatles happened in the summer of 1966 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, a stadium recently demolished. The fans there no doubt screamed up such a pandemonium that a set list that included Day Tripper, Long Tall Sally and especially a gentle, wistful ballad sung by Paul McCartney would have been hard to hear. Next week, a troupe of note-for-note recreators play pitch-perfect versions of Fab Four music, for those who still believe in yesterdays.

July 30 and 31, 6:30 p.m. Roy Thomson Hall Patio, 60 Simcoe St., roythomson.com.

FOR THE KIDS

Ivan Amodei

But can he make the traffic disappear? Clad in an Armani tux and Piaciotti shoes, the magic man Ivan Amodei brings his swank but family-friendly Intimate Illusions show to town. His mind will appear to divine, his hands will do very sleight things and his apples are not like yours or mine. Accompanied by the amazing cellist Irina Chirkova, this suave trick-doer is one of the classiest in the presto business.

July 25 (1:30, 4 and 8 p.m.). $75 to $100. King Edward Hotel, 37 King St. E. 866-811-4111 or ivanamodei.com.

OUT OF TOWN

Buffy Sainte-Marie

In 1964, she assertively called her first album It’s My Way, and since then the quivering-voiced, Cree singer-songwriter has never looked back. Until now. Her latest album, the Polaris-nominated Power in the Blood, includes a contemporary reboot of the title track from that inaugural album. “I've got my own stakes, in my own game,” she sang then and sings just as fiercely again. Next week, her way is Highway 11, which takes her to the Algonquin Theatre for a concert in cottage country.

July 29, 8 p.m. $20 to $45. Huntsville, Ont., 705-789-4975 or algonquintheatre.ca.
