ART & MUSEUMS

Three Mexican Photographers

A group exhibition collects the vintage black-and-whites of Antonio Caballero, Graciela Iturbide and the car-crash specialist Enrique Metinides, whose work focused on the onlookers as much as the catastrophes themselves. March 1 to 24. Free. Nicholas Metivier Gallery, 451 King St. W., 416-205-9000.

Finding the Fallen: The Battle of York Remembered

Assembled not to glorify conflict or to encourage myth-making, a commemorative exhibit – involving paintings, artifacts, custom-designed maps and first-person accounts – honours those who fought here 200 years ago, while providing a moving reminder of the realities of war. March 3 to Sept. 8. Free. South St. Lawrence Market, 95 Front St. E., toronto.ca.

CLUB

Black Milk

"I don't really like to do the same thing twice." So says Curtis Cross, the heralded hip-hop producer/MC and Jack White collaborator who brings his Claps and Slaps tour to town. He'll be here, as before, with his band Nat Turner, but don't expect the same show: His incorporation of funk, soul, gospel, and rock into hip hop is an evolving adventure. March 8, 10 p.m. $15 (available at Soundscapes and Rotate This). Great Hall, 1087 Queen St. W., 416-537-1620 .

CONCERTS

Arturo Sandoval

There are many reasons to thank the iconic bebopper Dizzy Gillespie, one of them being his discovery in 1977 of the Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Now a legend himself, Mr. Sandoval says thank you to his mentor in the best ways possible: A concert of master's music, from the Latin-flavoured compositions Manteca and Tin Tin Deo to bebop classics Salt Peanuts and Night in Tunisia. March 3, 8 p.m. $54 to $59. Markham Theatre, Markham, Ont., 905-305-7469 .

Toronto Classical Singers

The 100 amateur, eager voices of long-running choir joins forces with the Talisker Players Orchestra and soloists for a program of lyrical, spiritual music that includes Vivaldi's Gloria and Schubert's Mass in G, performed in a relaxed setting and at a very reasonable hour. March 4, 4 p.m. $25 to $40. Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St. 416-443-1490.

Jann Arden

Her latest album is called Uncover Me 2, which is probably reason enough for the likable singer-songwriter to pose nude for Zoomer Magazine, right? Don't answer that, just head down to Massey Hall for Jann Arden, the chatty Juno winner who's got things covered for two nights of hits – some of her own, and some of her favourites made first by others. March 9 and 10, 8 p.m. $59 to $99 . 178 Victoria St., 416-872-4255.

Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester

Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end. And for some (namely the crooning Rhinelander Max Raabe), the cabaret dance and dashing swing of the Weimar Republic-era never did stop. March 8 and 9, 8 p.m. $45 to $90. Koerner Hall, 273 Bloor St. W., 416-408-0208.

COMEDY

Second City

The sketch-comedy masters offer highlights of their recent hit revue Dreams Really Do Come True!, while weaving in sneak peaks at some of the skits and songs of their new show ( Live Wrong and Prosper, opening March 13). $24 to $29 . 51 Mercer St., 416-343-0011.

THEATRE

The Happy Woman

One of them wants to be normal, another wishes to be perfect, and a third desires to be happy. Mutually exclusive conditions? Find out with a dark comedy about a family that isn't as joyful as it appears to be. March 7 to 24 (previews, March 5 and 6). $15 to $46 . Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs, 26 Berkeley St., 416-368-3110.

The Small Room at the Top of the Stairs

Skeleton, closet, foreboding door – we think you know where this is going. A newly married woman is drawn to the secrets within a room that might be better off undisturbed (if only to save her time with her housekeeping duties). Carole Fréchette's mystery thriller makes its English premiere. March 7 to April 8 (in previews now). $21 to $51. Tarragon Theatre, 30 Bridgman Ave., 416-531-1827.

War Horse

Some war. Some horse! A moving, vividly presented First World War drama has a mechanical stallion for a star – a three-man puppet-horse that first raised its hoofs at London's National Theatre in 2007, to blockbuster effect. To May 6. $35 to $175. Princess of Wales Theatre, 300 King St. W., 416-872-1212.

DANCE

Entity

England's red-hot dance-maker Wayne McGregor is intrigued with the notion of dance as science, or how the mind and body work together to produce movement. This neuroscience-inspired dance fuses movement and technology against a breathtaking backdrop, with a score that features music by Coldplay and Massive Attack collaborator Jon Hopkins. March 3, 8 p.m. $45. Fleck Dance Theatre, 207 Queens Quay W., 416-973-4000.

Dark Matters

Inspired by "the dark matters" of both science and of the soul, the last 15 minutes of choreographer Crystal Pite's riveting two-act piece are, says The Globe's Paul Citron, among the "most sublime ever created in dance, overwhelming the heart and mind with the images created." March 3, 2 and 8 p.m. $25.26 to $99 . Bluma Appel Theatre, 27 Front St. E., 416-368-3110.

LITERARY AND LECTURE

Andrea Martin

The SCTV comedian might talk about her character Edith Prickley. She might discuss her upbringing in Maine. She might even describe the sensation of running one's fingers through Eugene Levy's eyebrows. Mostly, though, for the Unique Lives and Experiences series, the affable lady will speak about a life spent making people laugh. March 5, 7:30 p.m. $39.50 to $87.50. Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe St., 416-872-4255.

FILM

Hugo

Was Martin Scorsese's first-ever feature for children a success? With five wins out of 11 Academy Award nominations, Oscar says yes. Globe film critic Liam Lacey agrees, calling the PG-rated movie about a homeless orphan living in a clock tower in a Paris train station "a richly illustrated lesson in cinema history and the best argument for 3-D since Avatar." March 3 and 4 (1:30 p.m.), March 7 (1:30 and 6:45 p.m.) and March 8 (6:45 p.m.). Fox Theatre, 2236 Queen St. E., 416-691-7330.

The Bunker, Downsview Park, 40 Carl Hall Rd., torontorollerderby.com.

The Purina National

When Angelina Jolie raised her leg at the Oscars, people were aghast. Same thing happens on the red carpet at the annual show of pooch, pomp and pageantry, where fire hydrants are never around when the doggies need them the most. March 9 to 11, $6 to $10 (weekend passes and family rates available). International Centre, Mississauga, Ont., purina.ca.
