Toronto police and security personnel at Toronto Western Hospital searched the medical centre's grounds at Bathurst St. and Dundas St. W. on Monday in response to a "suspicious letter" that hinted at a bomb threat.

Kathy Sabo, vice president of operations at Western, said the unsigned letter arrived via her office and a "Code Black" – the designation for a bomb scare – was put into effect shortly before 1 p.m. The hospital was not evacuated and operations continued normally until the search was concluded and officials determined the grounds were safe around 3 p.m., Ms. Sabo said.

The episode marked the first time the hospital had ever been the target of such a threat, Ms. Sabo said. "We took the threat seriously," she said.
