Police say a fight in downtown Windsor, Ont., that claimed the life of a Toronto man doesn't appear to have been a random act.

Chief Al Frederick says 19-year-old Gautham (Kevin) Kugathasan was with one of two groups of young men who clashed in a fight early Saturday morning that stretched over a city block.

Kugathasan was in Windsor to attend university and was fatally wounded in the melee, which also saw five other men suffer non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Frederick says about 10 people were involved in the brawl, and that several members of the rival groups knew each other — with almost all known to police except Kugathasan.

Police say they are reviewing video evidence, and have arrested one suspect allegedly involved in the brawl.

Windsor resident Ali Mahmoud Ahmed, 30, is charged with possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose.
