Charges have been laid against a 23-year-old woman who police allege falsely claimed she had cancer in order to raise money for herself.

Police say Ashley Anne Kirilow raised thousands of dollars in fake charity money by claiming she was suffering from cancer.

Police say the woman organized various fundraisers with the assistance of others who believed her to be terminally ill.

Police say Ms. Kirilow turned herself into an Oakville, Ont. police station on Friday and she has been charged with three counts of fraud under $5,000.

She appeared Saturday in court via video link to face the allegations and will be held in custody until a bail hearing on Monday.

A Facebook group with more than 1,000 members has been created denouncing the woman's alleged actions as "despicable."
