A startling gash of emptiness in the natural landscape will form Norway's memorial to 77 people, mostly teenagers, who were killed by a madman.
A jury selected Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg to design two memorials to the victims of Anders Behring Breivik. For the memorial at Utoya, where most of the victims fell, Mr. Dahlberg's winning design proposed "a symbolic wound" in the landscape "to reflect the abrupt and permanent loss of those who died," in the words of the jury's announcement.
On July 22, 2011, Mr. Breivik shot 69 people to death at a youth camp at Utoya run by the country's Labour Party, after a bomb he triggered outside a federal building in Oslo killed eight others. The right-wing extremist was found by the court to be sane and sentenced to the maximum penalty of 21 years in prison.
Material excavated for the cut will be used in construction of a second memorial to the victims of the Oslo blast.
Visitors will not be able to touch the names of those killed – these will be engraved into the wall on the other side of the void.
