A Canadian citizen of Palestinian descent has been detained in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, for allegedly stabbing a university imam.

Local media say the suspect attacked American University of Sharjah imam, Diaa Al Swaidan, when he was walking home after prayers Wednesday afternoon.

The imam suffered only minor injuries.

The suspect, a former student at the school identified only as Ahmad, was arrested after he crashed his car during a police chase.

Police were quoted as saying that the attacker was suffering from psychological problems.

The incident provoked a brief lockdown at the university.
