From humble beginnings, and through turmoil and heartbreak, the man affectionately known as Madiba freed his people and brought South Africa out of the darkness of apartheid. The price he paid for ending apartheid was high. However, his ability to rise above the worst the apartheid regime could throw at him made him an icon of tolerance and forgiveness, and one of the great figures of our time.
