From, Trade war looms: Trump adviser says Trudeau deserves ‘special place in hell’ for criticizing U.S. tariffs, by Robert Fife

It is Donald Trump who is backstabbing Canada and the Western Alliance by starting a trade war. This all weakening the West and is Making Russia Great Again. Trump is doing the work of Vladimir Putin and is a threat to all of us - zuglo9

You can’t help but think that Kim Jong-Un must be thinking...any deal I sign with this guy is not worth the paper it’s written on. - AllisBon

In response to AllisBon’s comment:

Absolutely correct - and that is why when all is said and done, Kim Jong-Un will hold a few nukes back. On the other front what do you think Iran will be doing over the next couple of years? - Doug’s a slug

From, Globe editorial: Donald Trump insults Canada, and tests its patience

Thank you for this eloquent editorial - nothing more to be said. Thank you Globe Editorial Board. Canadians must rally behind the PM and the Government in standing firm against the bully south of the border. We didn’t pick this fight - we did everything within reason to avoid it and we absolutely can’t back down otherwise Trump will perceive it as weakness and inflict further harm. - Priscille LeBlanc

It goes without saying Canada is going to get it’s nose bloodied either way. If we roll over to the US, we lose. If we try to fight back against a country that outweighs us in every conceivable metric, we lose. Better to stand up and lose with dignity, eh? - Ted in Ontario

From, There won’t be any winners in this Canada-U.S. game of trade chicken, a column by Campbell Clark

I’m not sure retaliation is the right way to go with Trump. I would just accept that he is insane, and try to have as few dealings with him as possible. Retaliation only makes him spiral upward and do more stupid things than he has already done. American businesses are furious with him at how he is destabilizing trade...let that play out. - Alison_D

Looking forward to seeing some leadership from Republicans such as Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and all the congressman, senators and governors whose citizens are going to be negatively impacted by this pending trade war. However, this seems like wishful thinking because they all seemed to be afraid of Trump. I am very proud of Trudeau and other real leaders such as Macron and Merkel who are standing up to Trump. - Pelk

This whole exercise is a pointless jeopardizing of the prosperity of the whole western world, entirely the creation of one Donald J. Trump. Once he started down this road, there were limited possibilities for a good outcome, as Trump is a fool and advised by a mix of rogues and charlatans (Kudlow was best described by one American writer as an “always-wrong pseudo-economist”; Navarro is an economically-illiterate economist who thinks that sales taxes are tariffs). And at this particular crossroads, unless Trump suddenly gets distracted by something else (granted, a possibility), the only choices are to either surrender and give him what he wants or join the EU and Japan in trying to inflict maximum pain on Trump’s political support. The latter course, while it will necessarily involve us taking hits as well, is the only viable one at this point. To accede to Trump’s demands at this point would be to tell not just him but every future US president that threatening to walk away from NAFTA is a club they can use to extract any concession they want from us. At that point, good luck trying to maintain any semblance of the national interest in our trade policy. - Sean C.

From, Which of the two Doug Fords will win out − disciplined leader or rogue premier?, a column by John Ibbitson

The biggest challenge for Doug Ford is whether he has the ability to grow and develop now that he is Premier. Mr. Trump, rather than getting on with government wants to act like every day he is still campaigning. Mr. Ford needs to demonstrate his ability to be Premier which is worrying less about the day to day comments being made and being focused on the longer term results of getting things done. One of the large challenges for his brother Rob as Mayor is that he tried to be the Mayor while still acting like he was a ward councillor. It takes a different set of skills to be an effective Premier than it does to be the leader of a successful campaign that gets you to government. We will probably have a good idea in six months whether he has or has not grown into the position. - J. K. Galbraith
