From: White House ties border wall to migrant family separations, by Tamsin McMahon

It is a sad commentary on a political system that has become so dysfunctional that it is willing to trade child hostages for a wall. The USA’s reputation is damaged by the fear and insecurity of its people who have turned to a narcissist for salvation. This cannot end well. - newcomer21

Using your children as part of an illegal border crossing is immoral. The blame lies with the parents. - Star_Chaser

In response to Star_Chaser:

May you never be so desperate, Star_Chaser. It’s easy for us, ensconced in our comfortable homes, to cast stones at people who are used to fearing for their lives and the lives of their children. Sure, some may be opportunists, but few of us would go to so much trouble to leave our own country if we didn’t feel a strong need; if we felt we had to go, would we leave our kids behind? - My2CentsEh

From: Globe editorial: With his policy on immigrant children, Trump shows he has no limits

Who else but Donald Trump would think of this? Deter illegal immigrants by showing them that the country they’re fleeing to is worse than the one they’re fleeing from. - HilkkaW

An American citizen takes his kids with him and robs a bank. All they wanted was a better life and thought this was the easiest way. The robber goes to jail and the kids are separated from their father. Would The Globe care to comment on the moral relativism? - Candace248

Time to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement with the US, wouldn’t you say? How can Canada continue to maintain that the US is “safe” for refugee claimants? - esmerelda4

Reading the comments sections in The Globe over the last few days has been nothing but head shaking. The number of Trump supporters - be it on migrants in Europe, support for Trump tariffs and now most disconcerting support for Trump’s international kidnapping - boggles the mind. Is there really this much hate in Canada? Unless one is a native North American, we have all come from from somewhere else. - Dipper1945

Ontario’s Doug Ford orders hiring freeze for public servants, by Justin Giovannetti

Ontario needs to get its finances under control. Freezing hiring is a reasonable step while the situation is being analyzed. Corporations do this all the time. Once we know how much debt the province has, decisions can be made on who to hire for what reason - kramnot

A hiring freeze might maybe create problems that cost money down the road, but ending discretionary spending is obviously a good move. - Jeugene

Ford is sending a message, consistent with his campaign. These are simple actions to take, but will it work? It may be that more work can be squeezed out of the existing workforce, but if the number of employees is to diminish, eventually the workload must drop. A meaningful change will require program cuts and greater efficiencies. This will not be easy. Is Doug Ford smart enough to get it done? - GBC1
