The action: A good candidate for wholesale renovatiuon, this boxy Strathcona home sold after just three weeks on the market for $29,000 less than the asking price.

What they got: The house was built in 1978; the nondescript exterior and interior illustrates the era's minimalism. The interior is bereft of architectural detail. It's a tuneless symphony of brown, from the wood paneling to the inexpensive kitchen flooring and the dim lighting throughout. There is tiny front yard, and the rear yard consists of a large deck and a concrete pad for parking overlooking a dismal back-alley vista, though the mountains poke out of the horizon. The lot size is 25 feet wide by 122 feet long, smaller than the standard lot size for Vancouver.

The agent's take: With its uninspired architecture and gritty industrial locale, the selling price is a testament to the enduring popularity of Strathcona. While the market has slowed considerably throughout Vancouver, Strathcona holds its value fairly solidly due to the village-like feel of the neighbourhood, and its proximity to Chinatown, Gastown, and the downtown core. It's expected that the new owners will completely gut the interior down to the studs and create a contemporary, up-to-date look to complement the feel of the urban surroundings.
