The Action: This detached residence with an attached double garage suited a small pool of buyers more invested in the lavishly landscaped corner lot than its location across from a small plaza. So it took a month of exposure to lure out a dozen visitors and one negotiable offer.

What They Got: Various owners modified this Georgian-style house, beginning outside where more than $150,000 was recently spent landscaping the 115-by-60-foot grounds with stone patios, decks, a water feature and wrought iron fencing around the secluded backyard.

The original 1960s bungalow was topped up with four bedrooms with either a walk-in closet or private bathroom, though the master has both.

Public quarters include a fireside living room and formal dining room, as well as an open family room off the eat-in kitchen and lower level recreation room with a guest bedroom and fifth bathroom.

The Agent's Take: "They had done extraordinary upgrades to make use of everything," says agent Doris Christensen, citing the backyard as one example. "The sellers had done high-end landscaping you typically find in multimillion-dollar homes."

However, alterations did not compromise the property's integrity. "The character of the home had a more traditional feel," Ms. Christensen says.

"It had a really large-size dining room, so it could accommodate a huge gathering, and the kitchen/family room aspect was quite a unique feature in that price range."
