The newspapers of CanWest Global Communications Corp. will be emerging from creditor protection soon with new owners, and a brand new name: Postmedia Network Inc.

"We tried to come up with something that would reflect the legacy we presently have as an organization," said Paul Godfrey, currently president of the National Post and who will step into the role of chief executive officer of the new company. "The post was the first way the news was ever delivered, via post. In more recent times, when you put a news story online you post it. And we're entering a new era of communications and newspapers, and this is post-media."

The name change would have been necessary eventually for the newspapers: the CanWest trademark will be acquired by Shaw Communications Inc. once its deal to buy CanWest's broadcast division is finalized.

The newspaper division, which includes large dailies such as the National Post and the Vancouver Sun, as well as a network of websites and smaller community papers, will officially operate under the new name when the company emerges from creditor protection. Mr. Godfrey said he anticipates this will happen in the next few weeks.
