Age discrimination and a difficult economy have sobered the career expectations of many older workers. High unemployment and an aging work force are forcing many midlifers to take a demotion in pay or responsibilities at work.

The dilemma for some: Should they just go along with a position that represents a demotion, or chase the one they think they deserve?

Work-life expert Barbara Moses joined Globe Careers for a one-hour discussion about how to deal with a midlife demotion, the factors to weigh, and how to handle a situation that may seem unfair and depressing. Barbara has written recently about midlife career change and says if you are in this situation, you need to consider your career alternatives, your financial and status needs, your motivations for wanting a powerful job and your external interests and responsibilities.

Barbara is a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail's Careers section, president of BBM Human Resource Consultants Inc., and author of several best-selling books, including her latest, Dish: Midlife Women Tell the Truth About Work, Relationships and the Rest of Life.
