The pre-holiday season can bring on some quandaries about proper workplace practices, so journalist Rebecca Pollack Scherr reached out to Anna Post, great-great-granddaughter of famed etiquette expert Emily Post, and shared this advice on Smartblogs.com:

Managers may wish to give staff gift cards from places such as Starbucks. If you’re an employee, however, don’t give a gift to a boss unless it’s done with a group of colleagues. Aim for something impersonal – and avoid alcohol, even if you know the manager’s favourite tipple.

If a co-worker gives you a gift and you don’t have one to reciprocate, offer thanks and write an appreciative note. If you have a small gift at home that is appropriate, provide it later.

Sending holiday e-cards and online thank-yous from your work e-mail has become acceptable.

Don’t post photos from the holiday party on Facebook; it can make some people uncomfortable, mixing their professional image with the personal.

If an employee has too much to drink at a work-sponsored event, it is appropriate to advise a manager from human resources. “Safety trumps manners,” says Ms. Post.
