(L-R) Geoffery Rush and Johnny Depp in a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - At World End.Peter Mountain

If your company is trying to be more innovative, why not take Captain Jack Sparrow as your model? On his ThoughtLeaders blog, consultant Mike Figliuolo highlights these attributes culled from Pirates of the Caribbean movies:

Forget the rules: Captain Jack doesn't abide by any rules. He can act in ways that those encumbered by rules can't,, potentially achieving creative results.

Don't overlook simple solutions: Captain Jack and his crew come up with great ideas emanating from the simple items at their disposal. "With all the data and information we have at our disposal we like making ideas all complexified because we think the more difficult they are to understand the better they might be," Mr. Figliuolo writes. "Don't overlook the obvious. Simple solutions can succeed more frequently than complex ones because the team can actually understand and execute the simple solution."

Be bold: When Captain Jack takes a risk, he does so with gusto. Chasing an idea half-heartedly will doom you to failure.

Experiment: When he fought Barbossa for Cortez's gold, Captain Jack gave being cursed a try. It worked: He became immortal, so it didn't matter when Barbossa rammed his cutlass through him. "When was the last time you experimented? Try something new just to see what will happen," Mr. Figliuolo advises.
