Descartes Systems Group Inc., a provider of business software, has acquired Ottawa-based ViaSafe Inc., a private company that develops secure electronic logistics services for global traders. The acquisition, announced yesterday, broadens the regulatory and compliance services available through Descartes' software. The technology is used by exporters, importers, trucking companies and others to deal with increasingly complex document exchanges under new international security initiatives and tightened borders. Financial terms of the transaction were not revealed. Through ViaTrade's electronic filings, ViaSafe aims to help customers move goods across borders more quickly and less expensively, thereby turning these new requirements into a competitive advantage, Descartes said. DSG (TSX) fell 7 cents to $4.23. CP
