The gift: $40,000

The cause: Scholarships for First Nation students in Ontario

When Norm Moffat was a university student in the 1970s, he spent a summer working for Ontario Hydro around Georgian Bay, helping install and repair power lines to cottages. Sometimes he ventured onto Christian Island and the Beausoleil First Nation reserve.

"It was my first exposure to what a First Nation reserve was all about," recalled Mr. Moffat, an investment manager who lives in Huntsville, Ont. "It just left kind of a lasting impression that I never acted upon until more recently."

Three years ago, he set up a $40,000 endowment at Georgian College to fund an annual $1,500 scholarship for a student from Beausoleil. The scholarship is awarded to students based on their academic record and community involvement.

Mr. Moffat said the award has been meaningful to him and, more importantly, the students. One recipient wrote to him: "This award helps me see that I'm heading in the right direction and if you do good, good will come to your way eventually."
