A Globe and Mail multimedia series on the future of manufacturing in Canada and an investigation into Sino-Forest's treatment of farmers in China were awarded Best in Business prizes by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the organization announced Friday.

Kevin Carmichael, Greg Keenan, Moe Doiron, Claire Neary, Adriano Valentini were honoured in the Creative Use Across Multiple Platforms category for Remade in Canada – the Future of Factories, a multi-part series that featured multiple print installments, audio, video and online debate.

The Globe and Mail's East Asia correspondent Mark MacKinnon was honoured in the Feature category for his story The Empire Sino-Forest Built, which looked at the farmers who sold their rights to Sino-Forest Corp. and were left with little after the company they helped build collapsed.

Both categories fall under SABEW's International awards division. This is the first time The Globe has submitted entries to SABEW's contest, which is now in its 17th year. The awards honour excellence in business and financial journalism across all news platforms.

"SABEW has structured our prizes not just to reflect the new ways stories are getting delivered over the Internet and in different media, but to make sure local journalism gets honoured along with the big national news outlets," SABEW president Kevin Noblet said in a press release.

Bloomberg News, Financial Times and GlobalPost each had nine wins; CNNMoney.com had eight, and The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Markets magazine each took seven.

Other winners include a feature from the Associated Press about a lawyer who represented victims of judges swayed by financier Bernie Madoff; a multimedia package from Bloomberg News on children who pick cotton in Burkina Faso; an investigation by Bloomberg BusinessWeek into casinos in strip malls uncovered a billion-dollar industry; and the Boston Globe was awarded for an investigation into restaurants that served lower-grade fish, uncovering lax government oversight.
