New False Creek Flats building meets practical needs of Vancouver outdoor gear firm, and encourages play and creativity
The new Vancouver headquarters of Mountain Equipment Co-operative was designed by Proscenium Architecture + Interiors Inc., who’ve worked with MEC since they converted the Mount Pleasant warehouse into their last HQ in 1999. It’s clad in glass, steel and composite cedar.Ed White
MEC’s success relies on both innovation and movement. The building’s nerve centre – a grand four-storey central staircase – is meant to be a conduit for both, drawing people up and down the building.Ed White
Each room is adorned with a splash of bright paint, and employees have the opportunity to either sit or stand at their desks.Ed White
The building’s high windows and slim, Y-shaped profile allows for its whole footprint to be flooded with sunlight, reducing lighting costs.Ed White
A multiuse room on the main floor is used for activities such as CrossFit and yoga classes.Ed White
The building’s numerous formal meeting rooms are each adorned with a shot of bright colour and a slogan, which CFO Sandy Treagus says helps to reinforce MEC’s “bring it” corporate culture.Ed White
MEC’s staff lounge opens up onto the roof and has sweeping views of the northern mountains.Ed White
Employees don’t have to bike to the north shore mountains to climb; there’s a bouldering room right on site.Ed White
Many of the company’s in-house products, such as sleeping bags and garments, are designed here.Ed White
The table in MEC’s main boardroom is made of solid walnut from Oregon and was designed by a Toronto cabinet maker.Ed White
The building is across the street from China Creek Park, giving MEC’s active employees quick access to green space. Read the full story at link below: Inside Mountain Equipment Co-op's modern, woodsy HQ.Ed White
