Former federal Conservative cabinet minister Peter MacKay is joining the Toronto office of the massive United States-based law firm Baker & McKenzie.

The former minister of justice, defence and foreign affairs, and a key member of Stephen Harper's cabinet, has been touted as a possible Tory leadership candidate.

But Baker & McKenzie, one of the largest law firms in the world and which has had a Toronto presence for decades, is to announce on Monday that Mr. McKay has joined the firm as a partner.

He will provide advice on a range of matters, including government and regulatory enforcement and compliance matters.

He will also offer strategic advice to Canadian companies doing business globally.

Just last week, Mr. MacKay told a CBC interviewer that he had not ruled out a leadership run, but that at the moment he was focusing on his family.
