Macau's economy is on a bad run – and its sizable gambling sector is largely to blame. Macau, a semi-autonomous Chinese region, saw its gross domestic product plunge 26.4 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier, according to data released Monday, even greater than the previous quarter's 24.5-per-cent drop. Macau's gaming sector – which accounts for half the economy, according to the Financial Times – has seen revenues decline in five consecutive quarters. China's crackdown on corruption and its slowing economy are considered key reasons for the sector's downturn.
