The parent company of Sirius XM Canada Inc. had a $4.1-million profit in the second quarter as the number of self-paying subscribers to its satellite radio services increased by 12.8 per cent from the same time last year.

Sirius XM Canada Holdings Inc. says its net income amounted to three cents per share, which compared with a year-earlier loss of $2.7-million or two cents per share.

Revenue grew 10.8 per cent to $70.7-million from $63.8-million a year earlier.

One of the company's strategies has been to work with auto makers to include satellite radios in new cars with some free service — hoping the buyers will later sign up to continue the service at their own expense.

Sirius XM Canada said it had 2.2 million total subscribers at the end of February, including 1,640,800 self-paying. That's up from 2.0 million total subscribers including 1,454,500 self-paying a year earlier.
