Cantor Fitzgerald Canada is expanding by adding a sales and trading team set adrift when Stifel Nicolaus pulled out of Canada .

It's a story of one U.S. firm growing while another disappears. Stifel abruptly shut up shop this summer, dismayed by a lack of business. Cantor Fitzgerald is going the other way, having purchased boutique Versant Partners in 2012 to get bigger in Canada.

The new hires at Cantor Fitzgerland are Brennan Howard, Gabe Vinizki and Kristofer Fisher. Mr. Howard and Mr. Vinizki will be managing directors, and Mr. Fisher will be a vice-president.

A few weeks ago, Cantor also boosted its research group by hiring Blair Abernethy as a senior technology analyst. He too came from Stifel Nicolaus.

Shawn Matthews, CEO of Cantor Canada's U.S. parent, said that the "hires reinforce our continued effort in building upon this network in Toronto and other key financial markets."
