TMX Group's head communications and marketing executive, Ronald Alepian, is leaving the company to take on the top communications job at CA Technologies Inc. in New York.

Mr. Alepian is coming off a busy few years at the TMX, overseeing the media-relations effort on the company's failed attempt to merge with London Stock Exchange Group Plc and its battle to avoid being taken over by a group of Canadian banks known as the Maple Group. That battle ended when the deal with Maple became friendly.

Since then, the TMX has been pretty quiet.

At CA, once known as Computer Associates, things promise to be more hectic. Mr. Alepian will be part of a much bigger company. He is also joining a year after a new chief executive who has a mandate to make big changes. He'll be working for Lauren Flaherty, who took over as chief marketing officer just a few months ago.

The move from exchanges to software is closer than it sounds – TMX chief executive officer Tom Kloet is fond of referring to his company as an applied technology company. Mr. Alepian also has a stint at Nortel Networks on his resume, so he knows the tech world well.

He also knows Ms. Flaherty from Nortel, as she was chief marketing officer there when Mr. Alepian was with the company.

Ms. Flaherty announced the change in an e-mail, saying "Ronald's responsibilities include media relations, industry analyst relations, government affairs, corporate social responsibility, and employee and executive communications. I have also asked Ronald to put a special emphasis on how CA's corporate communications efforts leverage social and new communications tools and tracking."
