Materials, RIM, lead Bay Street advance

Canadian stocks rose, breaking a two day slump, as materials producers and Research In Motion Ltd. rallied. Silvercorp Metals and Tanzanian Royalty Exploration each climbed more than 6 per cent, leading a materials index 1.3 per cent higher. RIM rallied 5.1 per cent, after a 15-per-cent drop yesterday, on better-than-expected subscriber gains.

Financials rebound on Wall Street

Financial stocks in the S&P 500 recovered from a 7.3-per-cent slide in the final hour of trading, paring the group's decline to 1.3 per cent. The S&P 500 ended the session up 0.2 per cent, while the Dow slipped 0.1 per cent.

Surging gold ignores greenback

Gold futures climbed above $950 (U.S.) an ounce yesterday, ignoring a stronger U.S. dollar and weaker energy prices as investment buying surged in bullion-backed, exchange-traded funds amid economic uncertainties. By the end of the session, gold futures had settled at $949.20 in New York, up $4.70.
