Intellectual property holder Wi-LAN Inc. has added LG Electronics Inc. of South Korea to patent litigation it previously filed against Research In Motion Ltd., Motorola Inc. and UTStarCom Inc. Wi-LAN, which launched the original suit in Texas on June 20, claims that all the defendants have infringed and continue to infringe on two U.S. patents it holds related to mobile handheld devices and other equipment. Wi-LAN, which has a stock market value of about $180-million compared with RIM's $67.7-billion and Motorola's $16-billion (U.S.), holds about 300 issued or pending patents, ranging from the television content filtering V-chip to an array of wireless telecommunications technologies. The amended lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas adds LG Electronics Inc. and LG Electronics Mobilecomm U.S.A. Inc. as defendants. WIN (TSX) rose 9 cents to $1.97.
