Born: Aug. 4, 1962, in Monmouth Beach, N.J.

As a player: A right-handed pitcher, Farrell was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 1984 draft. He pitched in 116 games over eight injury-plagued seasons with the Indians (1987-90, 1995), California Angels (1993-94) and Detroit Tigers (1996), missing the entire 1991 and 1992 seasons with right elbow problems. He retired with a career record of 36-46 and 4.56 earned-run average.

Upon retirement: He spent five seasons, from 1997 through 2001, as assistant coach/pitching and recruiting co-ordinator at Oklahoma State University, his alma mater.

Big-league return: Farrell served as the Indians' director of player development from November of 2001 until joining the Boston Red Sox in November of 2006. He's spent the past four seasons as Red Sox pitching coach working under manager Terry Francona, a former teammate in Cleveland.
