Canada's senior women's basketball team defeated Argentina 65-55 to open the Super Four International Tournament on Friday.

Kim Gaucher of Mission, B.C., and Justine Colley of East Preston, N.S., led the team with 11 points each as Canada broke away with a 16-4 run in the second quarter.

Gaucher finished one rebound shy of a double-double, while Tamara Tatham of Brampton, Ont., added 10 points including an 8-for-8 performance from the free-throw line.

"Seeing Argentina was good in terms of giving us a benchmark if we happen to see them again at FIBA Americas," said head coach Lisa Thomaidis. "Despite not playing to the best of our abilities, we were able to gut out the win with some good defensive work, especially in the second half."

Canada next plays Puerto Rico on Saturday at the three-game, four team competition that also features host Brazil.

The 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Women will begin on September 21 in Xalapa, Mexico.
