The Montreal Alouettes have released quarterback Troy Smith.

The former Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State joined the Alouettes midway through the 2013 season and took over as the starter Oct. 20, compiling a 2-1 record. He was under centre for the overtime loss to Hamilton in the Eastern semi-final and was expected to take over the starting duties full-time in in 2014 following Anthony Calvillo's retirement.

Smith struggled to a 1-5 start, completing just 47 per cent of his passes as the Alouettes averaged a league-low 16.3 points per game. He last saw action in a 33-23 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos on August 8th before being placed on the team's six-game injured list with knee, ankle and thumb injuries..

Jonathan Crompton has since emerged as the starting quarterback, winning five of his last seven starts.

Smith, who previously had stints with Baltimore, San Francisco and Pittsburgh of the NFL before coming to the CFL, completed 143 of his 288 passes for 1,873 yards, 13 touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
