Winnipeg Blue Bombers starting quarterback Matt Nichols will miss four to six weeks with an unspecified right knee injury.

The CFL team made the announcement on Thursday, one day after Nichols was hurt during a training-camp practice. Nichols, who fell to the turf without being touched by a teammate while dropping back to pass on Wednesday, will be put on the six-game injured list, but is eligible to play after four weeks.

Nichols had a breakout season in 2017, passing for 4,472 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Bombers to a 12-6 record.

Quarterbacks Alex Ross and Chris Streveler were battling for the No. 2 spot behind Nichols before the injury.

The Bombers play their preseason finale on Friday night in B.C., against the Lions. They kick off the regular season on June 14 against the visiting Edmonton Eskimos.
