All week, John Hufnagel has followed the horrific events at his alma mater, Penn State University.

As a former Nittany Lion quarteback, Hufnagel, now the Calgary Stampeders' head coach, has declined to comment on the sex scandal and abuse of young boys by former Penn State assistant Jerry Sandusky, which led to Wednesday's firing of long-time head coach Joe Paterno.

Hufnagel, a Pennsylvania native, played for Paterno in the early 1970s.

After Thursday's preparation for the Stampeders' playoff game in Edmonton this Sunday, Hufnagel was asked if he saw the riots that occurred at Penn State after Paterno's firing was announced.

"I've followed it on-line," Hufnagel said.

As for his thoughts, Hufnagel replied: "It's not a proper time to talk about a really sad and unfortunate situation."

Hufnagel declined to say more.
