Romeo Crennel
Knocking off the previously undefeated Green Bay Packers and guiding the Kansas City Chiefs to a winning record in his short stint as interim head coach reportedly was enough to get Romeo Crennel a chance as the full-time coach.
The team has decided to keep Crennel, league sources told ESPN.com, though there was no immediate word on when an official announcement would be made.
Team officials could not be immediately reached for comment, according to the report.
Crennel took over after coach Todd Haley was fired on Dec. 13, when the Chiefs were 5-8. Crennel helped guide Kansas City to wins in two of its final three games, including the Week 15 win to spoil Green Bay's bid for perfection.
Earlier reports indicated the Chiefs had interviewed former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, and Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.
A favorite of the players, Crennel had not cautioned against simply counting on their support in his attempt to land the job.
"I appreciate their support, but I don't think they sign my paycheck," he told reporters during the process. "If they were signing my paycheck, I would really appreciate it and really enjoy it."
Crennel went 24-40 as the Cleveland Browns' head coach from 2004-08.
