Stampeder fined for ‘repugnant’ twitter comments about Michael Sam

Calgary Stampeders' Maurice Price

The Canadian Football League has fined Calgary Stampeders' receiver Maurice Price for "making inappropriate negative comments on social media towards St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the National Football League.

The amount of the fine was not made public Tuesday. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon issued a statement saying the league "will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Whether its race, religion or sexual preference, our values are of acceptance and equality. We fully support openly gay athletes in our league, and in the sports community in general."

The Stampeders fired off an angry response Monday chastising Price for his offensive Twitter comments.

Price wrote, "My faith won't allow me to ACCEPT what took place over the weekend! Sorry, NOT sorry! #AdamandEve #NotAdamandAdam".

The Stampeders said they were "outraged" by the comments, calling them "repugnant and in no way reflect the organization's views or values."

Price, later contacted by the Calgary Sun, said he has nothing personal against Sam but added, was speaking about homosexuality in general. "As a Christian, obviously it's not something I can condone or accept."

Price insisted he was not homophobic.

The NFL fined and suspended Miami Dolphins' defensive back Don Jones for tweeting "horrible" after Sam celebrated being chosen in the NFL draft by kissing his boyfriend.
