Chris Killmer captured his first career Canadian Tour title on Sunday, defeating fellow American Vince Covello in a playoff at the Players Cup in Winnipeg.
Killmer, making his 15th start on the developmental circuit, needed just a par on the fourth extra hole to secure the victory.
It was the fourth Canadian Tour event in a row that went to a playoff.
The win and first prize of $24,000 come as an early wedding present for the 25-year-old Killmer, who is set to get married on Aug. 11. "I'm on top of the world right now," he told cantour.com. "To win the Players Cup this week, and getting married to my best friend next month, the timing couldn't be better."
Killmer of Bellingham, Wash., and Covello of Philadelphia both shot two-under-par 69 at 100-year-old Pine Ridge Golf Club on Sunday to finish regulation at 15-under 269.
They were five shots clear of third-place David Lang, a Toronto golfer making his Canadian Tour debut. Lang got into the tournament by winning a qualifying tournament last Monday.
The other big winners on the day were Matt Hill of Sarnia, Ont., and Cory Renfrew of Victoria.
Hill tied for eight place and Renfrew shared 38th spot, but more importantly for them they maintained the top two places on the Canadian Tour money list. In so doing, they've earned berths into the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open next week in Ancaster, Ont.
They bring to 16 the number of Canadian entrants scheduled to play in the national championship, which begins July 26 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Up to four more could gain entry at the Canadian Open's final qualifying tournament next Monday.
Matt Makinson of Coquitlam, B.C., started the day tied for third and needed to finish inside the top 11 to meet the requirements of his partial medical exemption. However, a final round 73 dropped him down into a tie for 13th, meaning he came up just under $900 short of the mark.
Eugene Wong of North Vancouver finished his first tournament as a professional by shooting 71 for a four day total of 2-under par. The former amateur standout posted four rounds of par or better over the course of the week.
