Andrew Parr

Andrew Parr came up short in his bid for his first European Tour victory, carding a final round 71 on Sunday at the Sicilian Open.

The London, Ont., golfer started the day three shots off the lead but a double bogey on the second hole had him moving in the wrong direction as the leaders pulled away. After making the turn at even par, he eagled the 14th but followed that up with a bogey on the 15th. He finished tied for sixth, five shots behind winner Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark.

It was Parr`s best career result in only his second European Tour start. He finished 13th at the Joburg Open back in January.

Olesen underlined his status as one of the European Tour's hottest young prospects by scoring his maiden victory on Sunday. The 22-year-old needed a par at the final hole for a 69 to hold off a late charge from Britain's Chris Wood (64) at the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort.

Wood picked up five shots in his first five holes - including an eagle on the par-5 fourth - and tied for the lead when Olesen bogeyed after hitting a wild approach shot to the 13th green. But Olesen recovered with a birdie on No. 14 and finished with four straight pars.

Two shots further back in a tie for third place were Dane Soren Kjeldsen (68) and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts (69).
