The Montreal Canadiens have assigned Rene Bourque to the American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs after the veteran forward cleared waivers.
Bourque has two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 games with Montreal this season.
The Lac La Biche, Alta., native has played 573 regular-season NHL games with Chicago, Calgary and Montreal. He has recorded 278 points (142 goals, 136 assists) and 474 penalty minutes in his career.
Bourque was originally signed as a free agent by the Blackhawks on July 29, 2004 following a four-year collegiate career with the University of Wisconsin Badgers.
The six-foot-two, 214-pound forward was acquired in a trade with Calgary on Jan. 12, 2012. The Canadiens also acquired Patrick Holland and a 2013 second-round draft pick (Zach Fucale) in exchange for Mike Cammalleri, Karri Ramo and a 2012 fifth-round pick (Ryan Culkin).
